Great thought provoking article and i would only add that one should think back to the day when they were that new Law School Grad or Lawyer asking for advice and were given it by an experienced Lawyer or maybe more importantly when you sought such advice and no one would take 15 minutes to give it to you. If someone took the time, you have an obligation to give back and if on the other hand no one took the time, you may have a greater obligation as you know how you felt.

As someone working in a non-traditional legal job, I am dreading the prospect of trying to explain what I can offer should I ever find myself interviewing for a job in litigation - this was a very relevant read! I would add that how you feel walking away from the interview is a good indicator of what it would feel like to work for that firm. If you don't feel so hot about the interview it's not such a terrible thing if you don't get the job. As much as you need the paycheck, you don't want to work for someone who doesn't appreciate your expertise and recognize your potential!

Angie,

I have read your blogs for a while now. You write very well. I am also a fellow blogger on this site. Do me a favor, read my site and send me a resume. If you want, I will help you brainstorm a bit; maybe we'll learn something new, maybe not ... It never hurts to have another sounding board ... Thanks, Nancy Glazer

Though I don't personally know the circumstances and issues involved the McDermott discovery fiasco, I suspect that some measure of what Jill is highlighting is a part of every e-discovery dispute: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. My kudos to her for saying out loud what I have been complaining about for years as I struggled to survive under these circumstances. One other point worth bearing in mind: you never know when that contract attorney is going to become a CLIENT. There are law firms for whom I used to sign very large invoices who will NEVER get another shred of legal work from me unless I am under threat of dismissal to use them, in part because of the issues Jill cites, and in part because of how their personnel treated me as a contract attorney. Reminds me of a old saying: you can always tell a lot about a person based on how he treats the waiters.

Angie, this is a great piece. As a fellow contract attorney I understand how difficult it can be to focus on doing things that you like - especially when you're in between projects. When I'm in between projects I try to remind myself that there is always one right around the corner. It's difficult but well worth a try.

I think this article makes very valid points. Document review has it's pluses and minuses, the biggest plus being "steady income." To that end, I think it is also important to mention that there are many attorneys (such as myself) who are doing document review while also running their own firm. There is a catch22 between having your firm up and running smoothly and leaving during the day to do doc review. While you enjoy the steady paycheck sometimes it is nice to have the flexibility to run your firm. Regardless of the circumstances, unless you are interested in making document review your career, staying "moving" is essential.
